CALL OF THE FLOOD

The Ohio River Flood of 1937 devastated New Albany and many other cities on the water’s edge. As its citizens worked to rebuild their homes, they witnessed strange things. People were seen wading through the floodwater and toward the river. Chanting could be heard from derelict buildings. An affliction spread among the townsfolk, defined by wet, clammy skin, fever, and red eyes. This was no mere illness, but an effect of supernatural influence.

The floodwater brought things much worse than destruction to the shores of New Albany. No one knew who she was or where she came from, but her unearthly appearance was undeniable. At first, she entranced the minds of those she spoke with. They abandoned their trades—fishing, boat building, and merchantry—and bestowed a fitting title upon her: the Prophet. Then, came the physical changes. Eyes bulged, skin drooped, and feet transformed into fins. They were no longer human, but something else - something primordial. The Prophet and her followers beckon the floodwaters to rise again, to submerge the whole world in blessed water.
